Avengers Doomsday On The Horizon

RUMOR: Doctor Doom May Be the Next Big Threat in the MCU

Avengers: Doomsday on the Horizon?

According to recent reports, Marvel Studios may be pivoting away from Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror as the primary antagonist in the upcoming Avengers film, Avengers: Doomsday. Instead, the studio is reportedly in talks with Robert Downey Jr. to reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but this time in the iconic role of Doctor Doom.

A Surprising Twist

The news comes as a surprise to many, as Majors has been heavily featured in the MCU's Phase 4 and was widely expected to be the main villain in Avengers: Doomsday. However, if the rumors are true, it would mark a significant shift in Marvel's plans.

Inspiration from the Comics

The potential casting of Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom could be a nod to the infamous "Iron Maniac" storyline from the comics. In that story, Tony Stark's mind is corrupted by a cosmic being, leading him to become a ruthless tyrant. The MCU could be drawing inspiration from this storyline to introduce a new and formidable threat to the Avengers.

The Russos Return

Adding further weight to the rumors is the report that Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed four of the most successful MCU films, are in talks to helm Avengers: Doomsday. The Russos have a proven track record of creating epic and emotionally resonant superhero films, so their involvement would certainly be a positive sign for the project.

As of now, Marvel has not officially confirmed these reports. However, with San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, it's possible that we could get some official news very soon. Stay tuned for updates.
